Selecting the appropriate dispersion medium directly impacts MXene processing versatility, shelf life, and final application performance. Water-based dispersions remain the industry standard for most applications, offering exceptional colloidal stability without surfactants due to MXene's inherent negative surface charge. This eco-friendly formulation excels in coating applications, membrane fabrication, and aqueous solution processing, with typical concentrations reaching 5-10 mg/mL for single-layer flakes.
However, water-based systems present significant limitations: accelerated oxidation kinetics, high surface tension causing poor wetting on hydrophobic substrates, and incompatibility with many polymer matrices. Organic solvent dispersions—particularly DMSO, DMF, and ethanol—solve these issues while providing dramatically improved oxidation stability (over 30 days vs. 2 days for water). Polar aprotic solvents also enable higher dispersion concentrations up to 50 mg/mL and facilitate compatibility with non-aqueous battery electrode processing and organic polymer composites.
Nanjing Mission New Materials Co.,Ltd offers pre-dispersed MXene solutions in both aqueous and organic solvent formats, with custom dispersion development available for specialized applications including printed electronics, conductive inks, and advanced composite manufacturing.
